If you wish to home a horse from us in the first instance you should send an email providing information about yourself and what you seek in a horse. We have a strict homing policy and criteria to be fulfilled; we are not in any hurry to rehome horses as it is imperative that the correct match is made - and we aim to home for life.
We will not home to anyone who is not known to us or by someone within our network. Depending on the strength of the connection it may be necessary to appoint a Guarantor who will also be required to sign the Rehoming Agreement as it will be their responsibility to ensure the continuing health and welfare of the horse in question whilst in your care.
Please note however rehoming is entirely at our discretion; if we do not consider that a person, their experience and ability or the environment in which a horse is to be kept will be suitable then they will not rehome a horse from us. Our general policy is not to home to persons under 18 years of age, ladies with very young children, those who are regularly away from home nor to certain areas of the country but of course exceptions will be made under the right circumstances.
The following should be noted before you get in touch:
- A Rehoming Agreement, approved by the BHA and RoR - which clearly states the undertakings any person rehoming a horse must adhere to will be signed by both parties, or Guarantor, where applicable.
- No horses are sold but are homed on a permanent homing basis with us retaining ultimate responsibility for the horse's well-being and welfare throughout its life ie we can immediately remove any horse that is not being appropriately cared for as this will constituent a breach of the Homing Agreement.
- If the horse is to be kept at livery the details of the yard including the contact information of the yard owner will be required and noted in the Agreement.
- We also require contact details of a family member or similar.
- Horses cannot be moved to an alternative location without our pre-approval of both location and yard.
- Once homed no horse can ever be sold on. Nor can a horse be passed on without our pre-approval of both the person and the new location. A new Agreement will be signed.
- Horses must be insured and we require proof of this having been done. This is to protect against any third party claims and cover veterinary costs in the event of accident or illness.
- Vaccinations must be kept up to date
- In the event that euthanasia is necessary for any reason we require a copy of the Veterinary Report.
- We will conduct home checks or appoint someone to do so on our behalf.
- One of the requirements of the Agreement is that we are provided with regular updates about a given horse.
- Whilst we can arrange transport on your behalf, you are responsible for payment of the cost.
- If is becomes apparent that the horse is not suitable for you or circumstances change which prevent you from appropriately caring for it, we should be advised immediately so that a new home can be found as soon as possible as we are not always in a position to take a horse back due to space restrictions. If we so able you should allow up to 8 weeks for this to be facilitated.
In the meanwhile you will remain wholly responsible for the horse's management and welfare [including any expenses incurred]. You should not cancel any insurance during this time as whilst under you care, it is your full responsibility for any necessary veterinary care to be given.
- The Agreement that is signed at the time of rehoming will note any blemishes, vices and/or known racing injures. If a horse is returned with any subsequent ailment or injury you may be liable for any necessary veterinary attention once the horse is returned to us.
- If there are valid welfare issues regarding any horse we have the right to remove it immediately and we will cover the cost of so doing.
Companion Horses
- A horse homed as a companion will be a horse that cannot be ridden; such reason may be due to behaviour under saddle or due to a physical condition. Full information will be provided.
- The same criteria apply in respect of horses that are homed as companion horses as to riding horses
- The Agreement will state that the horse is not to be ridden; we will not be held responsible or liable in respect of any injury to yourself, the horse or a third party or any damage caused should you attempt to ride the horse. Such action will also result in immediate removal of the horse and we will not permit you to rehome another horse.
